Xénophobie, racisme ? De quoi parlons-nous ?

La xénophobie (littéralement : peur de l’inconnu) est plutôt facile à expliquer car c’est un phénomène courant chez les animaux comme chez les humains. Face à quelque chose que nous ne connaissons pas, à quelqu’un qui paraît différent, notre réaction instinctive peut être de curiosité ou de peur.

Ce sera la curiosité si nous nous sentons en confiance et en sécurité, mais la peur si nous sentons notre position menacée.

Cette peur peut isoler lorsqu’elle nous conduit à éviter tout contact avec « l’inconnu ». Elle peut aussi induire méfiance et colère, à titre d’autoprotection. C’est ainsi que naît le racisme.

On May 31st, 2011 in Brussels, the ADECCO company was convicted of using racial discrimination in their recruitment policy. The company was fined € 25,000 in damages to SOS Racisme and a symbolic sum of €1 to the Belgian labour union FGTB.

A Florence, en Italie, des forces sociales et civiles de toute l’Europe ont décidé de se rencontrer pour mettre au point un plan de mobilisation pour, à terme, changer la société.

¿Por qué obligar al emigrante a meterse en unas relaciones de fuerza cada vez más duras mientras que el proceso de regularización es una constante bajo la Vta República? Regularización a posteriori de 1,4 millón de trabajadores extranjeros bajo la presidencia de De Gaulle, de varios millares bajo las de Pompidou y Giscard y ello pese a un contexto difícil de crisis. Todo el mundo recordará también el comienzo de la presidencia de Mitterrand y de la esperanza recobrada para las más de 130 000 personas regularizadas. Siempre hubo constancia y regularidad en las regularizaciones.

Struggling to exist: the battle which thousands of men and women have been fighting for months and in some cases years – they get up everyday and go to work, but do not have the necessary documents.

One often hears about demonstrations of undocumented immigrants. I wanted to know what it is really about – what motivates their struggle. I wanted to understand the origins of such passion to really live rather than simply survive. My research took me to the CGT (General Confederation of Labour) trade union – in fact, to Francine Blanche, who is the national officer for labour rights and against discriminations.
