73 ans de vie sur terre. 41 ans au pouvoir. Deux vieux âges, et le doyen des chefs d’Etat africain tire sa révérence hors de son Gabon natal. Après plusieurs démentis de la présidence gabonaise, elle finit par confirmer la nouvelle le 8 juin 2009 : Omar Bongo Ondimba, président du Gabon depuis 1967 et doyen des chefs d’Etat africain, est mort dans une clinique de Barcelone en Espagne. Mais qui était cet homme et que peut-on retenir de son règne ? 

Benjamin, issu d’une famille d’agriculteurs de douze enfants, Omar Bongo est né sous le nom d’Albert-Bernard Bongo le 30 décembre 1935 à Lewaï dans la province du Haut Ogooué. Albert Bongo rejoint les services secrets français après son service militaire. Il travaillait ensuite comme commis des postes aux côtés du futur premier président du Gabon Léon Mba. Après l’indépendance en 1960, il devient vice-président et bras droit de Léon Mba. Albert Bongo lui succède en 1967. En 1968, il fonde le parti démocratique du Gabonais, socle du monopartisme jusqu’en 1990.
